The chaparral biome, characterized by dense, drought-resistant shrublands, is found in areas with Mediterranean-type climates (mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers) and is adapted to periodic wildfires. Chaparral vegetation is dominated by drought-resistant, evergreen shrubs with small, leathery, and often waxy leaves. Many of the plants are adapted to fire, with some species requiring fire for seed germination or stump-sprounting.

Chaparral soil is often coarse and rocky, which allows rainwater to drain away quickly, contributing to the dry conditions.

The chaparral biome is home to a variety of wildlife, including mule deer, coyotes, jackrabbits, and various bird species, all adapted to the harsh conditions.
