Savannas, also known as tropical grasslands, are rolling grasslands with scattered shrubs and isolated trees, found between tropical rainforests and deserts, and characterized by seasonal water availability and warm temperatures. They have warm temperatures, typically ranging from 68° to 86°F (20 to 30°C), with a 6-8 month wet season and a 4-6 month dry season. Savannas arose as rainfall progressively lessened in the edges of the tropics during the Cenozoic Era, particularly in the past 25 million years.

Lions, African wildcats, zebras, giraffes, elephants, and various bird species are commonly found in savannas. Many animals migrate out of the savanna during the dry season.

Some animals, like vultures and hyenas, are scavengers that feed on the remains of other animals.
